100 Fics That I Love: #012

{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

In no particular order: One Small Step by Sandymg

Title: One Small Step
Author: sandymg
Pairing:
Jared/Jensen, Jensen/Tom, Jensen/OMC
Rating: R
Word Count: 37,000
Warnings: adult content, homophobia
Summary: Jared has had a secret crush for months. But it’s not like publishing genius and gay activist Jensen Ackles is going to notice the tall, weird guy pushing the mail cart. So when Jared’s best friend and Jensen’s assistant, Sandy, tells him that Jensen is getting married in one month to a fellow activist -- something about being the first gay couple to get married in the state -- Jared knows some things just aren't meant to be.

And now Sandy is insisting that Jared help her plan the wedding. She thinks it’s a good idea. Jared thinks she’s nuts. Because the only thing this could lead to is heartbreak. Right?

I remember when I was first reading this I was a little leery knowing that in  alot of J2 fanfiction they don't necessarily present any mental illnesses and syndromes very realistically. I mean I've worked with kids with Autism and the likes before, and I plan to make it my career so I know a lot about it. So I was reading it hoping that it portrayed it in a very nice light or either realistically. I can honestly say I was wrong, Sandy has done a wonderful job in portraying asperger's syndrome. For anyone who has no idea what the hell that is, well just read this fic and Sandy will give you great detail and insight into this syndrome.

I can't praise her enough over her intelligent writing into this syndrome and the people who have it, that being Jared. Jared is a real treat in this fic because he's so smart and intelligent, like most kids with syndromes and mental illnesses are and it disheartens me seeing that people portray them as any differently. While it's hard trying to write the syndrome right, it's even harder portraying people's reactions to it. Because they vary so much. She does it beautifully by portraying Jensen as confused at little but but understanding, even beginning to love Jared for his quirky behavior, which really makes Jared shine. She also deals with other issues like political messages for gay rights and homophobia. I think mylifewithin write a tiny review on this and summed everything up well.

This story was a treat to read, it had me enthralled from start to finish but it really effected me emotionally. Which good stories are supposed to do so, and I'm so glad I gave this a shot. I really hope one of you will too.
